The classically chic Lafite, 4 time winner of the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival’s Golden Cauldron Award for Best All Round Restaurant, was a familiar dining spot for many of the guests who attended the intimate Dine Around Dinner on 28 November. The dauntless Chef Kevin, who prepared a resplendent 12-course tasting menu for the evening, was also a familiar personality to most.
Before the evening’s dining got underway, Dato’ Steve Day managed to pull the busy chef out of the kitchen to give diners a quick welcome over the specially blended aperitif at Lafite’s bar. After introductions were made, the group was lead to the dining area to begin the unique marathon dinner.
After the first few courses had thoroughly whet appetites, Dato’ Teo Chiang Hong said “I have never come across anything so creative. It’s just fantastic. It’s obvious the chef has a real dedication to his work and this is an entirely new experience for me”. He said he had particularly enjoyed the innovativeness of the first course, ‘The Cloud’, which comprised a spiced popcorn powder.
Chef Kevin, who personally introduced each course to diners as it was brought out of the kitchen, clearly impressed with his creative flamboyance. Said the Festival’s Royal Patron, YAM Tunku Laxamana Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, “This meal certainly scores gold for innovation. Every dish is superbly unique, and it goes without saying that the taste is excellent. The chef is so inventive, it’s really really amazing”. He added that he had particularly enjoyed the ‘Truffled Brie’, a dish of melting Brie Cheese, Black Truffle and Croutons.
Tunku Naquiyuddin’s son, YM Tunku Mohamed Alauddin, was especially enamoured by the garlic bread and said that everything about the night had been “excellent”. He commented that we was full but couldn’t stop eating! “The service has also been excellent” he added.
One of the group’s few first timers to Lafite, Ambassador of Sweden, Her Excellency Helena Sangeland, also commented on the “faultless” service. She added, “This meal has been so surprising, it’s like an adventure because each course is so unique. I really liked the Prawn Miso Bubble. I really don’t know how the chef turned it into such a unique creation while retaining the authenticity of the taste”. She added that the wine pairing had obviously been carefully thought through as each wine was perfectly matched to its accompanying course.
Dato’ Tan Hoe Pin, a regular diner in the restaurant, said he had come with many expectations because “you always expect a certain quality of food and experience at Lafite”. This particular dinner though, exceeded even his expectations. “I’m blown away. It’s amazing. This experience has put Lafite on a whole different level. Everything has been awesome, the food, the service, the wine. It’s all just so good, I can’t even pick a favourite course!” Like the other diners, he emphasised the chef’s skill in combining unique flavours, temperatures and ideas, and executing them so elegantly. He wrapped up a superb evening of dining by saying “this is one chef who truly knows how to please even the most discerning palate”.
